Learning objectives
The student will acquire a well-rounded knowledge regarding the study of the subject: in particular, historical grammar, metrical issues, textual tradition and criticism; he/she will be prompted to becoming acquainted with Greek literature; the student will develop the skill required to read critical editions of Greek texts; he/she will become acquainted with bibliographical and linguistic sources.
Prerequisites
good knowledge of Greek language and Greek literature is recommended prerequisite for the course; students who do not have any basic knowledge of Greek language will be given the possibility to attend specific “Greek zero” (elementary) courses.
Course unit content
<p>The <em>spoudogeloion</em> in Greek lyric poetry. A) reading, translations and commentary on Greek poetry (original text). B)1) knowledge of the historical grammar, metrical issues, textual tradition and criticism; 2a) Homer, <em>Od</em>. IX; 2b) Greek lyric poetry (original text): a selection of fragments (Archilochus, Hipponax, Mimnermus, Sappho, Alcaeus, Anacreon); 3) Plutarchus, <em>De invidia et odio</em>; 4) knowledge of Greek literature; 5) additional critical essay assigned during the course. </p>

Teaching methods
The teaching method in use is appropriate to the specific needs of the subject which requires the communication of the main course contents through classes; discussion with the students about textual problems; tutorial programs for the students; practical exercises of Greek metre, historical grammar and literature are onschedule. The final examination will include an oral exam to ascertain familiarity with course material.
