Course unit partition: GENERAL SOCIOLOGY

Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with the tools and theoretical concepts to understand the basic elements and the authors of the sociological discipline in general and the sociology of health in detail, focusing on the dynamics of rapid social transformations, with particular reference to health care settings.

Course unit content

The course is ideally divided into two parts:
1 The sociological discipline; 2 The sociology of health.

Full programme

1 The sociological discipline:
a) birth of the discipline and historical context;
b) the founding fathers of the discipline;
c) the main theoretical currents and their contextualization in time and space;
d) the main "objects" of sociology: the elements of social life (groups, interactions, symbols, nets, etc);
e) communication dynamics in sociology (verbal and non-verbal reality applied to health).
2 The sociology of health:
a) health, illness, medicine: the sociological perspective through the contemporary;
b) Birth of the sociology of health and environment strorico reference;
c) the social representations of the disease and the individual patient (both diachronic and synchronic);
d) The doctor-patient relationship; by Talcott Parsons in our days;
e) The main sociological paradigms of health;
f) theoretical models emerging in the sociology of health.
