Learning objectives
Attending students will be able to understand the topics, the specialist language and the terminology belonging to the discipline (1)
Consequently the students will be able to present and discuss the main issues of medieval history, identifying causes and effects of historical phenomena, linking sources to historical knowledge (2).
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of medieval history.
Course unit content
Medieval History. Historical Sources of medieval Italy.
The first part of the course will be focused on the main issues of medieval history and in particular on:
- The political geography of the Early Middle Ages;
- The basic features of byzantine and islamic civilisations;
- The relationships between political and ecclesiastical institutions;
- The growth of the West;
- The particularism and the political coordination;
- The decline of the Middle Ages.
The topic of the second part of the course will be focused on different types of italian medieval sources and their use in the historiography.

Teaching methods
Preparatory lessons, analysis and intepretation of the sources, slideshow.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination. Before the beginning of the oral examination, the student will have a test composed of a text comprehension, an open-ended question and ten closed-ended questions. Task time: 30 minutes.
