Learning objectives

Give to students basic knowldege regarding major parasites and related diseases. Particular attention is given to farm animals and food safety.

Course unit content

Introduction to parasitology: direct life cycle, indirect life cycle, definitive host, intermediate host, paratenic host. Epidemiology of parasitic infections.
Classification, morphology and physiology of following group of parasites: 1)Nematoda, 2)Trematoda, 3) Cestoda, 4) Protozoa 5) Arthropoda
Parasitic Diseases of major interest for animal production and food safety (zoonosis):
- Liver flukes
- Cryptosporidiosis
- Hydatidosis
- Toxoplasmosis
- Trichinellosis

Practical classes are dedicated to identification of major helminths, plus common laboratory methods of collection/preservation of biological samples, associated to parasitic elements microscopic identification.
