Learning objectives

Module 1 aims to provide students with a
basic understanding of the forms of male
violence against women, the mechanisms
through which it occurs, the stereotypes
present on the subject in our society and
in the process, as well as to outline the
basics of the main protection instruments
offered by civil law to women and their
children.

What is gender-based violence? How to
recognise it and protect yourself.

- Recognising gender-based violence
The forms of violence: physical,
psychological, sexual, economic,
witnessing
The most common stereotypes of gender-
based violence
Secondary victimisation
- Legal institutions for the protection of
women victims of violence and their
children in civil proceedings
Focus on:
- Protection orders
- Child custody regimes in cases of
domestic and witnessing violence
- Fathers' and children's attendance
- Measures of an economic nature
- Protection in juvenile proceedings
Exercise with solving practical cases in
working groups
- Insight into stereotypes regarding
violence against women
Focus on the history of music (guest
lawyer Elena Bigotti).
- Stereotypes in court decisions:
secondary victimisation and analysis of
the work of the parliamentary commission
on feminicide (report of 20 April 2022)
Violence against women online and in the
media (guest Chiara Cacciani -journalist-
and Samuela Frigeri - lawyer of the anti-
violence centre in Parma).

Teaching methods

Lectures are alternated with active
learning methods, through group work
and practical exercises. Discussions with
students will always be favoured, also
with a view to developing argumentative
and critical skills.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination is unique for all
modules, is written and consists of a multiple-choice test relating to the topics
covered in all modules.
The test consists of 30 questions and
each question corresponds to one mark.
For each question only one answer is
correct.
The students must answer all questions
compulsorily.
Each student has one hour to complete
the test. For Erasmus and special needs
students the duration of the test will be 1
hour and 20 minutes.
