Course unit content

The course is organized into three modules: two focusing on aspects of architectural conservation, from the consolidation and seismic protection of historic structures (analysis and conservation of existing structures) to the reuse of buildings (conservation and restoration design); the last module is dedicated to the quantitative aspects of assessing the safety of existing buildings (structural safety assessment).
All modules include a theoretical part and a section dedicated to applying theories to a practical case of a historic building (not necessarily registered) to be restored.
For a detailed description of the topics covered in the theoretical parts, please refer to the single modules’ description.
The practical exercises involve applying the knowledge acquired to the restoration, reuse, and structural and material consolidation of a real historic building. Initially, students conduct site inspections (in groups) on individual case studies to acquire the level of knowledge necessary for defining the interventions, which are then developed and designed to simulate a concrete design application as realistically as possible.

The exam is conducted orally. Students present their project (individually or in groups) and are questioned individually on the theoretical aspects related to the three modules. The final grade is an average of the marks awarded for the project and the grades for the theoretical parts.
