Learning objectives

The objective of the course is to provide the students with a complete knowledge about the active compounds used as nutraceuticals, and their use in the field of human health care. The course will also allow the acquisition of an appropriate and scientific language consistent with the framework of the course.
Specific objectives are:
1. Knowledge and comprehension (acquiring a deep knowledge of the characteristics of the active compounds, their origin and their potential use)
2. Application of the acquired notions (being able to discuss about the notions acquired throughout the course)
3. Communication ability (being able to relate about the notions acquired, using a proper language)

Prerequisites

Knowledge of principles of chemistry, chemical biology and organic chemistry is required

Course unit content

The first part of the course will focus on the principles of the interaction between bioactive compounds and their molecular targets, and on their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics aspects. The second part of the course will focus on different classes of compounds with a biological activity.

Full programme

Definition of active compound (with nomenclature of the major functional groups in medicinal chemistry).
Principles of pharmacodynamics and kinetics.
Metabolism of active compounds.
Molecular targets of active compounds (receptors, enzymes, nucleic acids, membrane transport proteins).
Interactions between ligands and their targets (definition of affinity, efficacy, agonists, partial agonists, inverse agonists, antagonists; enzymatic inhibition – competitive/non-competitive inhibitors).
Definition of medicine, nutraceutical, functional food, dietary supplement.
Interferences between active compounds.
Structure and activity of esters and amides of fatty acids with a relevant biological activity.
Endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids.
Structure and activity of melatonergic ligands.
Structure and activity of compounds useful for the treatment of dyslipidemia.
Structure and activity of compounds with antioxidant activity.
Structure and activity of compounds used for treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Bibliography

“Introduzione alla Chimica Farmaceutica” (G. L. Patrick, Edises)
“Chimica, biosintesi e bioattività delle sostanze naturali” (P. M. Dewick, Piccin)
To review the basics of organic chemistry: "Chimica organica" (W. H. Brown, B. L. Iverson, E. V. Anslyn, C. S. Foote, Edises)

Teaching methods

The course will consist of theoretical lessons that will be held in presence. Slides of the lessons will be shared with the students through the Elly platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination consists of an oral test, preceded by a short, written test (5 questions). The students will have to pass this test (3/5 correct answers) in order to have the possibility to proceed with the oral test. The examinations cover all the topics of the course outlined in the program. The examination will be provided in presence.
