Learning objectives

By the end of the course the student should:
- have knowledge of periodontal diseases (epidemiology, pathogenesis and microbiological features)
- be competent at periodontal/peri-implant diagnosis
- have knowledge of the protocols of non-surgical therapy (step 1 and 2)
- develop knowledge and competences on supportive periodontal care and supportive peri-implant care (step 4)

Course unit content

The course offers a critical appraisal of the scientific basis and theoretical knowledge for the diagnosis and non-surgical therapy of periodontal and peri-implant diseases

- Periodontal and peri-implant anatomy
- Epidemiology of periodontal diseases
-Etiopathogenesis of periodontal diseases
- Microbiology of periodontal diseases
- Classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions
- Mucogingival deformities and conditions around teeth
- Acute periodontal diseases
- Risk factors for periodontal and peri-implant disease
- Clinical periodontal and peri-implant assessment
- Principles of radiographic analysis of the periodontium
- Clinical Decision-Making for Periodontal Care
- Periodontal therapy: goals and sequence of treatment
- Step 1 of periodontal and peri-implant treatment (risk factor control, professional mechanical plaque removal, behaviour change, motivation, use of antiseptics)
- Step 2 of periodontal and peri-implant treatment (sub-gingival instrumentation)
- Supportive periodontal and peri-implant care (step 4)
- Endpoints of therapy
