Learning objectives

The laboratory aims to promote:
- Knowledge about autobiographical narrative as an instrument for research and psychological intervention on life stories;
- knowledge of main techniques for the analysis of an autobiographical text;
- ability to design a narrative research through the use of autobiographical writing.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic psychological concepts, such as Identity and Self.

Course unit content

The laboratory aims to examine some basic concepts of autobiographical narrative as a tool for the analysis of parental identity in vulnerable contexts (e.g. detention).

Full programme

Autobiographical writing as a tool of psychological research; the main features of autobiographical narrative; dialogical nature of narrative and the researcher’s role; the role and the functions of the first-person narrative; the timing as organizer of meaning; the using of keywords to build categories for the analysis of autobiographical text.

Teaching methods

Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supportive material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations, audio-video aids or video-recordings of the lectures.
Interactive lesson characterized by an active participation of the students: discussion in large groups and exercises in small groups and/or individually.
Preparation of briefs reports.
In the event that the worsening of the current health emergency (Covid-
19) does not make it possible the lesson at presence, it will be totally online at distance in
synchronous and asyncrhonous mode (Teams).

Assessment methods and criteria

The final test will consist in the analysis of an autobiographical text through the lenses introduced during the laboratory. The laboratory will be approved if the student proves to be able to apply the acquired knowledge.
