Learning objectives

The course follows the trajectory of the history of cinema, from its origins to the contemporary times.
It aims to provide students with the necessary tools to:
- appreciate the role of cinema in shaping the identity of the 20th century
- comprehend and critically analyse the audiovisual text.

The course focuses on the general history of cinema by addressing the following topics:
- Early cinema
- Silent cinema in the 1920s (especially Soviet cinema)
- Sound in Europe and America
- Art cinema
- The "new waves" of the 1960s and 1970s
- Postmodern cinema

Teaching methods


Lectures. During the lectures, the course topics will be discussed in depth and some films will be shown. A list of films to watch in order to pass the exam will also be provided at the beginning of the lectures. The lectures will be structured with the aim of stimulating students to discuss and debate the topics covered in the classroom. The Elly online learning platform will also enable the consultation of the list of films to watch in order to pass the exam (which will also be deposited in the administrative office).

Assessment methods and criteria


The examination will be written exam aimed at
to evaluate the student's ability to comprehend and analyze the texts in the syllabus and the films indicated for passing the exam. The assessment criteria will be linked to the degree of satisfaction with the above parameters.
Students who do not attend regularly will refer to what is indicated in the bibliography/examination filmography.
A failing grade is determined by a lack of knowledge of the minimum course content. A sufficient mark (18-23/30) is determined by an acceptable level of preparation on the part of the student of the assessment indicators listed above, average marks (24-27/30) are awarded to the student who demonstrates a more than sufficient level (24-25/30) or good level (26-27/30) of the assessment indicators listed above, high marks (28/30 to 30/30 and honours) are awarded on the basis of demonstration of an excellent to outstanding level.
