Learning objectives

1) knowledge of theoretical, methodological and ethical foundation of contemporary social work
2) Application of practice skills of engagement, assessment, planning, evaluation and termination in direct practice settings.
3) knowledge and ability to apply and critically evaluate different theoretical frameworks in a variety of client situations.
4) Skills in written and oral communication in working with clients

Prerequisites

At the beginning of the course, knowledge acquired in the first year of the Master, including basic understanding of social services legislation and social work values and ethics, will be evaluated.

Course unit content

1) Foundation: theories, practice theories, method, values
2) The helping process phases: engagement, assessment, planning, implementing, termination and evaluation
3) Practice guide by theories: theoretical assumptions and key concepts of four practice theories: Person Centred Model, Task Centred, Motivational Approach, Relational Model

Teaching methods

The primary teaching approach in this course will be cooperative learning. Material in the course will be presented through class discussions on readings and additional material presented by the professor, class activities (including role-playing), and videos.

Assessment methods and criteria

1) Written test with close-ended 28 questions on the main theoretical concepts (0.5 to each question; max. 0/14)
2) Case study (0/16); 3 pages maximum

The test and the case study have to demonstrate:
-skills in written professional language
-understanding of the key theorectical concepts
-understanding of the helping process stages
-application of one of the practice theories to a social work case study
