Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding (knowledge and understanding)
The course provides models and tools of strategic and operational management of
industrial and service companies. The features developed will refer to the best
practices in the design and management of business processes and enable students to an improvement in the decision-making process.
At the end of the course the student will have the knowledge acquisition described below and will be able to:
• to evaluate the external competitive environment;
• carry out a study of the sector;
• understand the prevailing trends in the development of business strategies;
• understand the role of resources and skills in the competitive success and as a
basis for formulating the strategy;
• understand the role of different business functions and the interrelationships
between them;
• Know the principles of organizational design and the main organizational
innovations, which have characterized the evolution of the modern enterprise.
b. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding (applying knowledge and
understanding)
At the end of the course students will have a complete view of the problems of management of business activities both in manufacturing and in services.
The ability to apply the knowledge will be developed through the teaching method of
the analysis of case studies and guided by discussion of selected articles from the
teacher and group work designed to systematize the business testimonials.
d. Communication skills (communication skills)
The involvement of the students from the beginning of the course by the teacher-led
discussions, which involve active participation and even critics of students, will
provide a significant contribution to the improvement of communication skills,
interaction and work in groups. In fact, the final phase of the learning process
includes the presentation by the students of group work focused on case studies,
which are another important moment of development of communication skills.

At the end of the course students will have developed the ability to select the best
sources of professional development. The network also allows the web today with a

Course unit content

The course aims to make known the fundamentals of management.
The course aims to provide concepts and models to analyze and understand the
competitive mechanisms, formulate strategies and manage business processes. In addition, the course aims to provide answers to the following questions: How to study an industry? What are the most important management models? What are the main stages of development of the managerial
culture?
The course is organized into three sections. The first has the objective to provide the conceptual tools that allow the analysis of the competitive environment of reference. In the second part the characteristics of management models is analised
with regard to industrial and service companies. The third section focuses on the presentation of the main tools of business management and pays particular
attention to the management of processes.
In detail, the contents of the lectures are: The competitive analysis. Analysis of the industry and the competitive system. Cognitive maps and scenarios. Globalization. The theory of resources and skills.
The formulation of business strategy. The evolution of management models. Taylor and mass production. The Total Quality Management (TQM). The Toyota and lean manufacturing. The business process reengineering (BPR). The innovation and
management of new technologies. Business functions and process management.
Relations between firms, purchasing management and supply relationships. The
management of the production process. The organization of the company. The
management of human resources. The main management models of service
enterprises. The integrated management of operational activities in the service
companies. At the end of the program the students who attended will be able to conduct a Industrial sector study.

In detail, the contents of the lectures are: The competitive analysis. Analysis of the

Teaching methods

Acquisition of knowledge: lectures

Acquisition of the ability to apply analytical methods: active presentations

Acquisition of judgments: active presentations.
The course is organized in 2 teaching modules. Each module includes at least 6 hours of active presentations.

Acquisition of learning skills: During the lessons will be introduced the basic theoretical concepts and models of economics and business management, with particular attention to the sector context. One of the problems today is the presentation of changes in business and managerial models due to the digital revolution. The lessons will favor the participation of the students and the critical discussion of the main topics examined.

Acquisition of technical language: Students will also be stimulated to an active learning by the study of cases, by reading scientific articles and by the vision of films having as their object the application of the theoretical knowledge discussed during the lessons to practical problems. Each student will have the opportunity to choose a case study or a scientific article to be presented in small groups. During the presentations, the teacher will facilitate the discussion by the rest of the classroom, making presentations an active and participatory part of the course.

The teacher is available during his student reception hours for clarifications on lectures and presentations.

Assessment methods and criteria

Verification of learning requires a written test with 6 open-ended questions. Each exact answer is worth 5 points.
The concrete ability to apply knowledge will be verified by
the calculation of some indexes covered by the program.
The autonomy of judgment, the ability to communicate and to acquire a language
Appropriate specific technician will be verified through open, focused applications
On corporate cases covered by the program and / or on short-term sector studies they will need

Only the use of a calculator is permitted during the test.
The vote will be announced within two weeks on Elly.
