Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with knowledge on the role of innovation in the economy from a theoretical and empirical perspective, and the task of the State in supporting and directing innovation. It also allows students to acquire a critical awareness on how innovation is changing because of the new digital technologies.
At the end of the course students will have acquired:
– The knowledge and understand of the different aspects of innovation;
– The ability to apply them to design projects of innovation;
– The ability to make judgements to assess the effects of innovation on the economy and effectiveness of the policy implemented by the State;
– Communication skills, through the use of a technical language appropriate to transfer to entrepreneurial and institutional environments the knowledge gained on the innovation phenomenon;
– Learning skills through the link between theoretical thinking and observation of facts.

Teaching methods
Acquiring knowledge and understanding: lectures and seminars with policy makers of institutions that promote innovation.
Applying knowledge and understanding: short writing assignments.
Making judgements: during the course students will be encouraged to critically think on the importance of innovation for the change and competitiveness of the economic system.
Communication skills: discussion of case studies.
Learning skills: each case study will be evaluated with regard to the consistency between the main aspects of the theoretical framework and their practical implementation.
Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam.
The exam will consist of 3 questions out 4, in 2 hours. The acquired knowledge, the ability to understand and apply such knowledge with independent judgement, will be ascertained by evaluating the accuracy and consistency of the answers. The ability to communicate with appropriate technical language will be ascertained by evaluating the language used in the answers to questions.
