Integrated course unit module: BIORIMEDIATION AND PHYTORIMEDIATION

Learning objectives

The part on phytoremediation provides to students technical knowledge about the types of phytotechnologies available at present for remediation of contaminated sites, and presents practical applications cases.

Prerequisites

Basics of genetics, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, plant physiology

Course unit content

Origins of phytoremediation, legislative aspects. remediation of organic compounds: the green liver model. Example of remediation of TCE and EDB. Example of different types of phytoremediation: Phytoextraction - phytotransformation - bioremediation in the rhizosphere - phytovolatilisation - phytostabilisation - Phtoremediations of metals and semimetals: genetics and molecular mechanisms utilised by plants to deal with metals. Examples and types of Hyperaccumulator plants. Use of higher plants, poplar and salix, to remediate metals contaminated sites.
Constructed wetland: types and functions. Case studies
