Course unit content

Bioremediation and phytoremediation are technologies developed to clean up contaminated soils with living organism (microbes or plants) by removing or neutralizing pollutants. Lectures introduce the problem of pollutants and their persistence in the environment. In the two modules the ability of microbes and plants to degrade or transform pollutants (organic and inorganic) are covered.
Fundamental information on microbial degradation or plant transformation of pollutants will be applied to the real world situation i.e. students will learn how to apply their background knowledge on biodegradation and biotransformation of pollutants.
Tutorials and self study provide further depth of understanding of bio/phyto remediation. A general goal is to develop critical thinking and application of the science.
