Integrated course unit module: SPORT MEDICINE AND DOPING

Learning objectives

Acquisition of knowledge and understanding of rheumatologic diseases and of their possible clinical manifestations with respect to physiscal activity. Acquisition of knowledge on physical and/or sport activity programs indicated in the single conditions and possible contraindications and risks. Acquisition of competence in communication with patients during physical training.

Course unit content

Object of the course is the knowledge of basic principles on classification, ethiopathogenesis and clinical manifestations of the most common rheumatologic diseases; on interactions between immune system and physiscal exercise; on benedificial and dangerous effects of physical activity and sport in patients with rheumatologic diseases as well as the major contraindications for professional sportive activity; on the training programs indicated in the single situations.

Full programme

Relevance of rheumatology knowledge for the physical activity trainer. Classification of rheumatologic diseases. Basic principles on the immune system. Possible pseudo-traumatic manifestations of rheumatologic diseases. Infectious and reactive arthritides. Gout and microcrystals arthritis. Rheumatic disease. Rheumatoid arthritis, spondiloarthritis e seronegative arthritides. Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Systemic slerosis. Polimyositis/dermatomyositis. Systemic vasculitides.Rheumatic polymyalgia. Fibromyalgia. Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Extra-articular rheumatisms and neurologic syndromes. For each disease particular attention will be paid on the aspects relative to physical activity, training and sport, and on the indications and contraindications to defined training programs.

Teaching methods

Lessons with slides and discussion with students.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam on the whole program in one single session with other sections of the integrated course. The knowledge and understanding of the subjects included in the program, reasoning capacity on the rheumatologic diseases, the acquisition of a correct terminology and the possible personal elaboration will be evaluated. Final score results from academic board consultation, based on the grading obtained in each course section.
