Learning objectives

The course of "Osteocondrogenesys: Models of biocompatibility in vivo and in vitro Mod B" is a part of the integrated course of "Biomaterials and biocompatible synthetic materials." The course aims to enable the student to know and to understand the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system, dynamics of deposition and bone remodeling, the standardization of experimental protocols and methodologies for the evaluation of osseointegration, concepts of tissue engineering and nanomedicine. At the end of the course, the student will have to demonstrate to know and understand the notions teached on the various topics during the frontal teaching and practical activity, moreover to know how to apply it for the standardization and for the evaluation of the experimental methods apply in the evaluation of the biocompatibility of bone biomaterials.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of Cytology, Histology, Anatomy and Physiology.

Course unit content

The first part of the course focuses on the deepening of knowledge about the locomotor emphasizing the biomechanical aspects. It then proceeds to deepen the knowledge on bone tissue and discussing issues related to the evaluation of osseointegration by means of models of biocompatibility in vivo and in vitro.
The teacher then speaks about biomaterials in orthopedics and dentistry, analyzes the legislation on animal experiments and tackles concepts of tissue engineering and nanomedicine.

Theoretical part:
Locomotor system: classification of bones and principles of biomechanic.
Components of bony tissue, Histogenesis.
Deposition and remodeling dinamics.
Morphological and structural characteristics.
Definition and classification of biomaterials employed in orthopaedic and dental field.
Experimental protocols for evaluation of osteointegration and experimental standardization.
Notions of legislation on animal experimentation
Methods for the osteintegration evaluation: bone vital markers, polarized
light microscopy analysis, histochemical and immunohistochemical reactions, histological stains.
Tissue engineering and new frontiers of nanomedicine.

Practical activity:
Locomotor apparatus: identification and isolation of single muscles, bone segments and articular components.
Histological techniques for processing undecalcified bone tissue with implants for the evaluation of osteointegration.
Histolgical stains, histochemical and immunohistochemical reactions.
Observation of histological sections by ordinary light, polarizing light and fluorescence optical microscope.
Observation of cells labeled with Immunofluorescence.
Digitalization and image analysis.

Teaching methods

The course includes theoretical lessons that take place in the classroom and practical activity that take place in the dissection room, in the Veterinarian museum and in the laboratory of histology.
For the practical activity is required the distribution of the students in different groups, the number of which depends only on the possibility of allowing each student to operate independently.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final exam, structured to evaluate the achievement of the objectives of the course, consists of an oral examination that is based on questions about the contents of the course.
The teacher will assess whether the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content and the ability to apply the acquired knowledge.
