Internships

The University of Parma promotes curricular internships in order to facilitate professional choices through direct knowledge of the world of work and the realisation of moments of alternation between study and work.

The curricular internship integrates and completes the student's training pathway through the performance of practical activities which, on the basis of the provisions of the Degree Course Regulations, may be carried out in structures within the University or externally at qualified public and private bodies with which the University has entered into appropriate agreements.

The internship involves three parties: the student, the promoter (the University of Parma) and the host (company or organisation) where the activity is carried out under the guidance of a student tutor, a university tutor and a company supervisor.

Curricular internships are not a prerequisite for an employment relationship between the intern and the host structure, nor can they be a substitute for company labour or professional services.

General Information

Practices related to the Communication and Contemporary Media for the Creative Industries internships will be supervised by Prof. Jennifer Malvezzi

1) Essential Intern Vademecum

Every student on the Communication and Contemporary Media for the Creative Industries course is required to acquire 12 compulsory ECTS credits as part of the 'Internships and other training activities', aimed at implementing practical skills and abilities.

12 ECTS credits = 300 hours [1 ECTS credit = 25 hours]

If additional internship hours are undertaken, up to a maximum of 3 ECTS credits (75 hours) more than the mandatory 12 ECTS credits can be recognised

The required 12 ECTS credits can be obtained:

- through internships at in-house locations such as:

  • Unipr Libraries [Arts and Performance Library]
  • CSAC - Study Centre and Communication Archive
  • CAPAS - Centre for the Activities and Professions of the Arts and the Performing Arts

- through internships at venues outside the university:

  • museums, galleries
  • cultural associations and foundations
  • communication agencies, web, social, graphic, design, fashion
  • audio-visual production companies
  • theatres
  • music auditoriums

- through internships abroad [Erasmus Plus SMT]: the Course internationalisation contact persons are prof. Giulio Iacoli and Giancarlo Anello According to the programme of study, it is possible to undertake an internship as early as the 1st year.
 
2) Recognition of external activities already carried out that may count as an internship

The university gives students the right to have credits recognised for internship-like experiences already carried out, i.e. without the support of tutors or internship supervisors, in a completely autonomous manner.
 
This requires the student:

1. began the internship while already enrolled at the university;

2. at the time of applying for recognition, has completed the internship no more than two years previously;

3. is in possession of appropriate documentation issued by the host organisation at which he or she undertook the internship, from which it is clearly evident

  • the start and end dates of the internship
  • the total number of hours of the internship
  • an accurate and non-generic description of the activities carried out, which must obviously be congruent with the student's degree programme and qualifying
  • the most accurate assessment possible, by the head of the host establishment, of the intern's activities

In addition to these documents, the student shall submit to the Head of internship for his or her course a simple application for validation of his or her internship on unstamped paper. All documentation, to be submitted to the Head of internship, will be assessed by the Course Council.
 
It is possible to recognise community service as an internship, up to a maximum of 6 ECTS credits.
It is not possible to recognise as an internship paid activities or activities already aimed at acquiring other qualifications.

 
3) Recognition of ECTS credits for other learning activities

Although the student considers the internship activity to be the most important, he/she may obtain part of the 12 ECTS credits through other learning activities:

  • study days, conferences, seminars
  • workshops: information on the workshops planned for each academic year is communicated to students during the course of the year

1 ECTS credit is awarded for each activity.
 
The acquisition of 12 ECTS credits is compulsory, but there is nothing to prevent a student from exceeding this threshold.
If the student decides to achieve the 12 ECTS credits by supplementing the internship with other training activities or community service, these will not automatically appear on Esse 3. The student - once he/she has acquired all 12 compulsory ECTS credits or reached the maximum number of credits of 15 ECTS credits - must then complete and email

this certification

to the Internship Manager, specifying which credits do not appear in the system in Esse 3. The documentation will then be validated and subsequently appear in the system, subject to evaluation by the Course Council.

 

4) ONLINE PROCEDURE for internship activation

As of January 2019, the ONLINE PROCEDURE for internship activation came into effect. According to the new management, each individual interlocutor - institution/company, student, university - has to manage exclusively online the part of their responsibility concerning the subscription of training projects.

1. The commencement of a internship always involves the conclusion of a Training Project and, if not present, a new Convention.

With the online procedure, the student has two options:

  • apply for an internship opportunity (if the organisation/company has posted an open opportunity)
  • make contact directly with the organisation and wait for the start of a specific internship for the student

For this reason, the list of organisations with which agreements are in place for the carrying out of internship in line with the themes and areas of the course of study is made available.
 
2. Even in the online mode, the closure of the internship always involves the completion of:

  • final internship evaluation questionnaire by the institution/company
  • final internship evaluation questionnaire by the intern
  • intern's final report to be enclosed with a pdf attachment

The procedure for the closure and recognition of ECTS credits by the internship supervisor is also carried out exclusively online.
 

5) Online internship closure procedure

The student who has completed the internship must:

  • Access his/her personal page on the Esse3 platform;
  • Go to the section Internships and traineeships and My internships;
  • Upload the student's final report in the Attachments section;
  • Upload the attendance form in pdf/word format in the Attachments section (the attendance form should NOT be signed by the university tutor but only by the company tutor);
  • Fill in the evaluation questionnaire;
  • Check the status of the evaluation questionnaire by the host company (green if completed).

N.B.

The final report by the student (1/2 pages) can be uploaded in word or pdf format;

the attendance sheet can be found in the Training Courses section of the Unipr website.
 
Once the required documents have been uploaded, the university tutor will be able to approve the internship and start closing the file.
