Integrated course unit module: Basic Midwifery II

Learning objectives

The student at the end of the course will be able to identify the real needs of a mother and her child or any issues relating to breastfeeding, to dispel doubts about the use of drugs by implementing listening skills and learning basic Counselling.
It will also be able to support breastfeeding routine recognizing the proper health by providing information about support groups or breastfeeding clinics.

Course unit content

The first lessons cover topics aimed at recognition of the importance of breastfeeding for the mother and the child and synthetic notions of anatomy and physiology of breastfeeding. In later lessons, it is the ability of Counselling (which become the instrument of acquisition of learning skills and communication for the student), how to identify and solve problems or diseases of the breast.
In the last lessons will provide knowledge about breastfeeding and drugs, proper practices to support breastfeeding and we examine the ten steps laid out by UNICEF/OMS to breastfeed successfully.

Why breastfeeding is important: breastfeeding benefits and UNICEF/OMS indications about infant feed. Breastfeeding physiology. The ten steps to breast successfully. Attach a baby infant. Evaluation of a feeding. Listening and learning, infuse trust and give support. Breast problems. Breast disposal. Squeeze the milk and its storage. Little milk.
Increase milk production and reallature. Crying
Children of low weight and sick: children with special needs. Breastfeeding and drugs.
Breastfeedingcontraindications.
Support of maternal breastfeeding
Marketing of maternal milk substitutes.

Teaching methods

The lessons mainly frontal provide practical exercises with the aid of illustrations, evaluation boards of a feed and miscellaneous (doll, a model of breast feeding tube, syringe, cup, etc ...).

Assessment methods and criteria

The student’s knowledge, topics’ comprehension and her/his skills to apply them on the occupational contexts will be evaluated by questions on the topics related to the course content. Failed answer to one or more questions or proved insufficiency of the basic knowledge on the subject will preclude the successful completion of the exam. In case of completion of the exam, an evaluation that contributes to the final grade of the course will be defined and it will be based on the achievement of the objectives (evaluated in thirtieth).
