Course unit partition: ZOOLOGY

Learning objectives

<p>The student will have to achieve the main instruments in order to describe animal structure  and function and to know the main animal taxa</p>

Prerequisites

Elementary concepts of Biology usually acquired in secondary school courses.

Course unit content

 Basic notions about chemical composition of cell (lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids) - Subcellular structures and their functions: membranes, nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, vacuoles - Differentiated animal cells, tissues, organs (basic notions) - Cell cycles and animal cell division - Cell death (necrosis and apoptosis) - Meiosis - Protozoa, morpologies and life cicles - Spermatogenesis and oogenesis - Chromosomes - Sex determination and sexual dimorphism - Sexual and asexual reproduction - Embrionic development (basic notions) - Level of organization, morphology, habitat, feeding, respiration, excretion, osmotic regulation of the main invertebrate and vertebrate groups- Basic of mammalian evolution - Basic concept of Ethology
