Learning objectives

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of safe and effective clinical practice.
Know and apply infection control clinical procedures in the dental setting.
Recognize the instruments used in the dental hygiene practice and the methods for their care and sterilization.
Know and apply the principles of ergonomics.
Simulate ergonomics and instrumentation techniques on dental mannequin.
Be familiar with digital procedures and management programs.
Develop the ability to gather and interpret relevant medical and dental data.
Apply psychological techniques of patient communication.
Make a dental hygiene assessment for prevention, motivation and home oral hygiene instructions.
Perform activities related to primary prevention in relation to the contents learned in the various courses and exercises carried out.
Assess the impact of oral health on the quality of life of the individual by administering questionnaires and interviews.
Analyze scientific articles on topics related to the learning objectives.
know the bureaucratic and patient access procedures of the Center of Dental Medicine.

Prerequisites

Certification of FAD Legislative Decree 81/08 occupational safety course
be familiar with the principles of the Code of Ethics.
know and know how to wash hands: social, antiseptic, preoperative.
know the professional skills of the dental hygienist related to patient assistance and care.
know the methods of motivating oral hygiene. know the home oral hygiene materials.
For clinical area: eligibility achieved after medical examinations at the Occupational Medicine.


Course unit content

Knowledge of professional skills, application of infection control techniques in the dental field, knowledge of the working context, patient assessment and data gathering, learning of the characteristics and use of the main clinical instruments on dental mannequins, primary prevention activities are the main objectives of the activities of internship.

Teaching methods

Simulation, project work, case analysis/solution, group work and exercises, role playing will be used.
Consistent with the educational objectives, the internship of the first year of the Study Course will be carried out in different areas of the Dentistry Center.
The internship will take place in:
the mannequin classroom, equipped with workstations for each individual student equipped with a manikin and monitor for pre-clinical simulation exercises of ergonomics techniques and instrumentation on mannequins and for learning IT procedures and management programs.
the sterilization area to allow students to recognize the tools used in dentistry and learn the methods for their cleaning and sterilization. the clinical area to learn and apply the techniques of prevention of contagion in the dental field and for all exercises of a preclinical and clinical nature of primary prevention.
the student classrooms to guide the students in the reading and analysis of scientific articles on topics related to the educational objectives.
the Biotechnology laboratory for learning the basic principles of research and experimentation.

Assessment methods and criteria

The internship exam at the end of the year will be accessible only to students who have reached the number of compulsory attendance hours for the current year. The assessment of learning will be composed of three parameters:
1) frequency
2) clinical skills by filling checklists 3) theoretical skills
