Learning objectives

The objectives of the course will be the acquisition of basic knowledge about blood cells, the physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms that regulate their formation in the bone marrow and the main diseases of the blood and hematopoietic organs. Students will have to show the ability to understand the physiology and pathophysiology of blood cells and hematopoiesis and will have to show competence in the notions that the student will acquire through attending teaching and studying.
The course will also aim to achieve independent judgment, communication skills and learning skills in the field of hematology applied to possible problems in the sports field.

Prerequisites

Course unit content

The first lessons covered general topics such as peripheral blood cells, their morphology, with a brief description of their physiology. The main mechanisms regulating hematopoiesis will be described including erythropoiesis, myelopoiesis and lymphopoiesis and the role of growth factors such as erythropoietin, thrombopoietin and myeloid colony stimulating factors.
The second part of the course is dedicated to the treatment of some blood diseases such as anemia, polycythemia and erythrocytosis, thrombocytosis, thrombocytopenia and the main tumors of the hematopoietic system (leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma). Etiological, pathophysiological aspects and the diagnosis of these pathologies will be addressed. Particularly the effect of the excercise on bloodo cells and their function will be described.
The third part of the course is stem cell transplantation and the quality of life of haematological patients, the role of sport in patients with haematological malignancy undergoing transplantation.

Teaching methods

Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations, audio-video aids or video-recording of the lectures.

Assessment methods and criteria

The primary mode of verification will be to make interactive lessons with questions aimed at students and their active involvement in the discussion on the main issues discussed during class.
A final check will be made through written and/or oral test with open questions on the main topics discussed during the lectures.
In case of the persistence of the health emergency, the exams will be conducted remotely using a dedicated interactive paltform
