Learning objectives
At the end of the learning experience every student should have acquired the tools and the basic knowledge of urban morphology, sustainable urban design and public space configuration. He/She will have to be able to critically connect these skills with each other in order to control the design experience in a comprehensive and conscious way.

Course unit content
The project of the compact, smart and sustainable city, in which all scales of contemporary living are enclosed, is the theme of the Studio. The urban morphology, as operative tool able to "read" the environment and "translate" it into a conscious design synthesis, is the main theme of the learning experience. Added to this are skills in the field of environmental sustainability and automatic design through the most recent Modeling and Environmental software.

Il laboratorio si caratterizza sull’esperienza del progetto al quarto anno di formazione dello studente-architetto dove si conclude e si consolida l’apprendimento degli strumenti della progettazione attraverso le diverse tematiche tipo-morfologiche, i contesti e le scale di definizione dell’architettura. Certamente il grado di apprendimento già piuttosto avanzato da parte degli studenti consente una messa alla prova di già elevata complessità, quella in cui il disegno del tipo architettonico, inteso come edificio, si rapporta al disegno della parte urbana, al luogo della città oggetto di interventi di trasformazione. Questo approccio implica una particolare attenzione relazionale tre le scale del progetto così come tra le funzioni e gli attori che vengono coinvolti dallo stesso. Aspetti distributivi, costruttivi, di identificazione degli spazi aperti ad uso privato ma soprattutto collettivo, componenti orografiche ed infrastrutturali determinano le fondamentali problematiche che il progetto deve affrontare con metodo analitico e quindi propositivo. A questo si aggiunge, fondamentale, la componente formale complementare a quella figurativa che conferisce identità e rappresentatività all’architettura progettata, con ricadute significative sulla qualità del paesaggio urbano, sul valore storico culturale, in senso antropologico, del luogo abitato, in generale su un’estetica significativa del contesto architettonico di cui va compresa l’evoluzione dalle origini per dare senso al suo sviluppo futuro. L’ambito della città costruita è quello all’interno del quale opera il progetto in coerenza con le strategie di contenimento del consumo di suolo, del recupero e della rigenerazione del patrimonio esistente a cui si riconoscono grandi potenzialità di trasformazione in senso quantitativo ma ancor più qualitativo. Nella logica integrata del laboratorio, concorrono alla definizione del progetto anche quei settori disciplinari quali la Sostenibilità ambientale, la Tecnologia, le Strutture e gli Impianti i cui contributi saranno fondamentali nella definizione del progetto architettonico e urbano prescelto.

Teaching methods
In class monitoring of the design activity carried out by the students along with a series of theorical lectures constitute the basic tools of the learning experience. Added to this is an "In-the-field" intensive workshop, lasting a week, carried out on the project area and a series of exercises necessary to monitor the work of the students for the entire duration of the course.
It will be possible to follow, if necessary, the lessons also remotely in synchronous mode (via Teams).
Assessment methods and criteria
Exposure of the project carried out during the academic year. The evaluation of the student is made considering both the final result of the design experience and his application in the different phases of the project. The evaluation is sufficient if the student demonstrates an acquired ability to face and solve the design theme in all its aspects, also in terms of oral presentation.
If necessary, due to the persistence of the emergency, the exams will be carried out in smart mode (via Teams)
