Learning objectives

To understand and familiarize with the main techniques of biological laboratory and their applications. To acquire basic abilities in view of laboratory activities both for subsequent lab stages in University or other institutions and for future occupation.

Course unit content

Theoretical introduction and practical application of the main procedures and basic techniques: micropipetting; microscopy; sterility and microbiological cultures; centrifugation; spectrophotometry; extraction, quantification and amplification of DNA; protein and nucleic acid electrophoresis; chromatography. Use of dicotomic kyes in zoology; istological procedures in botany; valutation of decomposition rate.

Teaching methods

The course is based on tutored practical activities within teaching laboratories. Il will also include short classroom lectures aimed at introducing the main theoretical aspects related to the different techniques.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam will be without mark; il will end with a judgement on the acquired skills and capacities. These will be evaluated on the basis of a test of 20 multiple choice questions relating to the laboratory experiences and it will considered passed with at least 10 correct answers. 30 minutes of time are given for the test. Only those who have been performed at least 2/3 of the scheduled exercises are submitted to the exam.
