Integrated course unit module: SPORT MEDICINE AND DOPING

Learning objectives

During the course the student will acquire specific knowledge on the topics of anatomy, cardiac and vascular physiology. He will know the concepts of cardiac output, arterial pressure, arterial pulse. He will know where the heartbeat originates, how it propagates in the heart and the meaning of the electrocardiogram. Finally he will know the cardiovascular adaptations in sport

Prerequisites

To know the cardiovascular anatomy.
To know the cardiac physyiology

Course unit content

The Course will deal with:
1) the anatomy of the cardiovascular system.
2) Physiology of the cardiovascular system
3) The athlete's heart: cardiovascular adaptations in sport

- Cardiovascular anatomy
1) heart and vessels
2) systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation
- Cardiovascular physiology
1) the heart pump, systole and diastole
2) pacemaker cells, the origin of the heartbeat and its propagation
3) outline of ECG
4) blood pressure
5) arterial pulse
- Athlete's heart
1) cardiovascular adaptations in sport
2) the role of the type of sport, gender and ethnicity

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral examination.
