Learning objectives

The course aims to investigate the instruments and methods of diplomacy, in order to critically understand the historical achievements and failures of models within the collective security and international cooperation, as seen in a dynamic perspective between the universal institution of reference and the power politics carried out by States.

Course unit content

The origin, nature and characteristics of the discipline, its scientific sources and research methodology. The rise and development of modern permanent diplomacy. Analysis of the historical processes of international order’s evolution over the centuries and interpretation of the organised models of international cooperation during the XX century, from the League of Nations to the work of the United Nations Organisation during the Cold War and in the present globalised era.

Teaching methods

Taught classes in remote mode. Analysis of diplomatic documents with the support of historical maps, seminars with experts and scholars.
