To understand and familiarize with the main techniques of biological laboratory and of their applications. To acquire basic abilities in view of laboratory activities both for subsequent lab stages in University or other institutions and for future occupation.

Course unit content
Theoretical introduction and practical application of the main procedures and basic techniques employed in biological research laboratories: solution preparation; micropipetting; microscopy; sterility and microbiological cultures; centrifugation; spectrophotometry; extraction, quantification and amplification of DNA; protein and nucleic acid electrophoresis; chromatography.

Teaching methods
The course is based on tutored practical activities within teaching laboratories. It will also include short classroom lectures aimed at introducing the main theoretical aspects related to the different techniques.
Following the development of the sanitary emergency of Covid-19, the course could be proposed in a new form in accordance with the guide lines of the University of Parma.
Assessment methods and criteria
The exam will be without mark, it will end with a judgement on the acquired skills and capacities. These will be evaluated on the basis of a test of 20 multiple choice questions relating to the laboratory experiences and it is considered passed with at least 10 correct answers. An hour of time is given for the test. Only those who have performed at least 6 of the 9 scheduled exercises are admitted to the exam.
Followin the Covid-19 emergency and in accordance with the guide lines of the University of Parma, the test could be done remotely through Teams platform
