Aim of the course is providing the students with the essential concepts useful to learn and understand structure and function of complex biomolecules.

Course unit content
The basic principles of Chemistry are introduced in the first part of the course: atomic theory, chemical bonding and chemical reactions with their properties. The second part of the course is also based on the discussion of some laboratory activities.
Full programme
Atom, chemical bond and interactions. Properties of solutions and concentration units, stoichiometric calculations. Acids and bases, pH concept; calculating the pH of various aqueous solutions; buffer solutions.
Basic principles of Organic Chemistry. Main characteristics of the following compounds: hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, amines.
