Learning objectives
Lectures aim at providing students with specific knowledge with regard to the protection of rights within the European Union. Students are expected to acquire:
- in-depth knowledge about the content of the main mechanisms of protection of the rights that EU law bestows to individuals;
- in-depth knowledge about the main evolving trends in the case law related to specific rights;
- the ability to study autonomously other specific aspects related to the same thematic area;
- the ability to elaborate critical observations on the application of the main legal instruments;
- the ability to frame correctly legal issues, either concrete or hypothetical, related to the protection of rights;
- the ability to develop arguments by using appropriate language and autonomous reasoning.
Prerequisites
Students shall have previously passed the exam of EU Law.
Course unit content
The course focuses on the protection of rights in European Union law. After a general overview, particular attention will be paid to the means of protection, both judicial and non-judicial, that individuals can activate to see recognized the rights guaranteed to them by European Union law.
Finally, the relationship between the legal system of the European Union, the legal systems of the Member States and the system of the European Convention on Human Rights will be analyzed. Some specific areas will be explored through the analysis of jurisprudence and the discussion of practical cases.

Students attending lectures:
notes, slides and the material provided during the lectures.
Students not attending lectures: a specific programme, based on relevant case law and academic articles, can be assigned by the professor.
Teaching methods
The course will alternate lectures and discussions on practical cases. During the course, the student will be involved in an internal moot court concerning a fictitious case.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination.
Acquired knowledge will be tested through questions aimed at assessing the effective understanding of the main mechanisms of protection.
The presentation of a practical case during the oral examination and the efforts during the internal moot court will be also taken into due account in order to assess students’ ability to apply in practice the acquired knowledge and their capability to make judgments on their own.
Students' communication skills will be assessed during the whole examination, in light of their ability to master the technical language.
