Provide the student with the basic knowledge about the interpretation of epidemiological data, the epidemiology of infectious and non-infectious diseases and prevention measures aimed at their control.

Hygiene definition and aims.
General epidemiology: definition and sources of epidemiological data: descriptive epidemiological measures (crude, specific and standardized rates); Epidemiologic measures of risk; Observational epidemiological studies (case-control, ecological, transversal and cohort studies) and experimental studies.
General prevention: different prevention levels
General principles of infectious diseases epidemiology: host-parasite relationship, sources and reservoirs of infection, transmission mode, occurrence of infectious diseases in populations
Principles of infectious diseases prevention: diagnosis, notification, isolation; disinfection and sterilization; Active immunoprophylaxis, different types of vaccines and vaccination strategies. Passive immunoprophylaxis. Chemoprophylaxis.
Principles of epidemiology and prevention of nosocomial infections.
General non-infectious disease epidemiology and prevention: risk factors and their removal. Protective factors. Screening.
Principles of environmental hygiene with particular reference to water: supply sources, main contaminants and their origin, quality standard for drinking water, water treatment techniques.
