Integrated course unit module: BASIC SCIENCES

Learning objectives

The Microbiology course is part of the integrated course of Basic Sciences.
The course aims to provide the student with essential knowledge about the general characters of microbes (bacteria, parasites and fungi) and viruses; furthermore, it will supply the ability of using the acquired knowledge and understanding as useful tools for a conscious approach to the infectious diseases.

Course unit content

Lessons will concern the topics listed below:

1. VIROLOGY
- Main biological, morphological and structural characteristics of viruses;
- viral infection phases


2. BACTERIOLOGY
- Main biological, morphological and structural characteristics of prokaryotic cell;
- resident bacterial population;
- bacterial pathogenicity


3. PARASITOLOGY
- Main biological, morphological and structural characteristics of protozoa (notes on metazoa);
- metabolic active form and resistance form;
- reproduction


4. MYCOLOGY
- Main biological, morphological and structural characteristics of fungi;
- the fungal cell and the fungal colony
- yeasts and filamentous fungi


5. TRANSMISSION ROUTES OF MICROBES AND VIRUSES

Teaching methods

Lectures accompanied by visual aids will be used to convey critical information on the topics relating to the course content

Assessment methods and criteria

Learning outcomes will be verified through a written examination (10 multiple choice tests). Written questions on the topics relating to the course content will be used to test the student’s knowledge and understanding in the field in order to be able to apply the acquired knowledge for a conscious approach to the infectious diseases.
The results of the examination will contribute to the final evaluation of the integrated course.
