Learning objectives
The main objective of the course is to provide the students with the essential notions to learn and understand the structure and function of the complex biomolecules. Of these molecules the student is required to know the fundamental metabolic pathways and regulation.

Course unit content
The first part of the course is based on the discussion of some laboratory activities.
The following lessons deal with the main classes of organic compounds.
In the last part of the course the biological macromolecules and the basic principles of metabolism are taught.
Full programme
Properties of solutions and concentration units, stoichiometric calculations. Acids and bases, pH concept; calculating the pH of various aqueous solutions; buffer solutions.
Basic principles of Organic Chemistry. Main characteristics of the following compounds: hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, amines.
Biological Macromolecules: aminoacids and proteins, carbohydrates, lipids.
Introduction to the metabolism: basic concepts of catabolism and anabolism.

Assessment methods and criteria
The achievement of the course objectives is verified by an oral exam. Through questions regarding the course content it will be verified whether the student has achieved the goal of knowledge and understanding of the topics and if it is able to apply the acquired knowledge.
