Characters segregation. Mendelian genetics. Independent assortment. Gene interaction. Chromosome theory of inheritance. Genes on X chromosome. Chromosome structure in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Multiple alleles. Linkage and recombination. Crossing over. Non-mendelian inheritance. Elements of microbial genetics. Recombination in yeast. Tetrad analysis. Recombination in bacteria, transformation, conjugation, recombination in virus. Identification of the genetic material. DNA: structure and replication. RNA structure, transcription and translation. The one-gene:one-enzyme theory. Structure of the gene (Benzer); complementation; cistron. Regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes. Operon Lac: negative and positive control. Spontaneous and induced mutation. Genome, chromosome and gene mutation.Setection of spontaneous or induced mutants. Selection strategy. Mutation frequency. Molecular basis of mutations. Physical and chemical mutagens. Reversion. Suppression. Population genetics.
