Learning objectives
Knowledge and understanding capabilities:
At the end of the course, the student will know the different operational solutions for the energy retrofit oriented reuse of existing buildings and will be able to evaluate them from a theoretical-methodological point of view, depending on the possible starting points.
Proficiency:
Through the theoretical analyses and the simple design activities, the student will develop an operational ability to face and solve the many problems of intervening on existing buildings, combining in an interdisciplinary way the aspects of materials, technologies, HVAC systems, aiming at a new design synthesis finalized to the (quantifiable) reduction of energy consumption.
Prerequisites
It is necessary to know the fundamental aspects of restoration, architectural technology, basic thermodynamics and architectural survey.
Course unit content
The Final Synthesis Laboratory in Analysis and Design for the reuse of built heritage is composed of several modules, in the fields of Restoration, Architectural Technology, Technical Physics and Architectural Survey.
More specifically, the Laboratory is composed of the following modules:
- Reuse of existing buildings
- Technologies for the refurbishment of buildings
- Buildings’ thermo-physics
- Survey and analysis for the reuse of architecture
All the modules are composed of a theoretical part and of an applied one.
In the second part, the theoretical knowledge acquired is applied to a real building (not necessarily enlisted) to be reused and energy retrofitted. The students will then work in groups, in order to make surveys (in the first part) and acquire all the information useful to define the interventions, later defined in all the material, technological, and energetic aspects.

Teaching methods
The course is composed of traditional lectures (taught class), also with Powerpoint presentations, and reviews, mainly in the second period.
Assessment methods and criteria
At the end of the laboratory, an oral examination focused on the practical design case examined, will allow to assess the preparation of every single student.
Other information
As for all the laboratories, attending the courses is compulsory.
