Integrated course unit module: BIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS OF REGENERATION AND REPAIR

Learning objectives

This core module aims to provide students with an understanding of mesenchymal cell characteristics and their potential in regenarative medicine. Peculiar attention will be paid on molecular characterization and on molecular mechanism of cell differentiation.

Prerequisites

None

Course unit content

The subjects presented in the lectures will be: cord blood, Wharton's jelly and placenta as sources of stem cells; mesenchymal cells from adult tissues; gene expression profile of mesenchymal cells and methods for molecular characterization; culture and expansion of mesenchymal cells in vitro; functional characteristics of mesenchymal cells: homing and trafficking.

Full programme

- Adult tissues and embryonic annexes as sources of mesenchymal stem cells
* Gene expression profile of mesenchymal cells and methods of molecular characterization
- Cultivation and in vitro expansion of mesenchymal cells
- Functional characteristics of mesenchymal cells: trafficking and homing
- Applied Engineering in mesenchymal cells
- Possible application of mesenchymal cells: the regeneration of beta cells
