Learning objectives

D1 – Knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Know the structural and management characteristics of livestock farming
2. Describe the main qualitative characteristics of products of animal origin, mainly milk and meat;
3. Know legislation about animal welfare in livestock farming and its application on the field.

D2 – applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Recognize the main livestock farming structure and understand its working principle and its efficiency;
2. Evaluate the efficiency of a livestrock farm.
3. verify the respect of animal welfare legislation in field conditions

D3 – Making judgements
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Explain parametrs concerning productive and reproductive aspects of livestock farming ;
2. General evaluation of animal welfare level in farm.

D4 – Communication skills
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Express clearly and with appropriate terminology during description of concepts concerning livestock farming and animal welfare.


D5 – Learning skills
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Learn concepts relative to the transformation of animal products;
2. Understand of new livestock farming systems (e.g. precision livestock farming)

Prerequisites

Prerequisites: 1004801 - Anatomia, Embriologia, Istologia degli Animali Domestici; 16964 - Biologia Animale e Vegetale and 1004803 - Zootecnica Generale, Miglioramento Genetico e Biodiversità

Course unit content

Breeding of dairy cattle: categories of animals, reproductive and productive cycle, production and characteristics of milk, rearing typologies
Beef cattle: growing, categories of animals, classification of carcasses, characteristics of meat, rearing modalities
Production of pork meat: categories of animals, breeding and classification of carcasses, pork meat categories (PRN, DFD, PSE).
Poultry breeding for the production of meat and eggs.
Animal welfare: definition, regulation and evaluation criteria.

Teaching methods

The course will be held through lectures to Students in synchronous-streaming (“in telepresenza”) on the Teams platform. Therefore, the opportunity of Student/Teacher interaction will be preserved by the use of the Teams platform. Lectures will be recorded and made available to students on Elly platform.
Lectures will be supported by slide presentations, which will be available to students on the Elly platform (elly2020.veterinaria.unipr.it).

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of expected learning results described in D1 and parti of those described in D2, D3, D4 and D5, is carried out by oral examination, with ten questions: five for the assessment of the knowledge, the understanding, the capacity of making judgements and communication skills of the students; five for the assessment of the capacity of the student to apply knowledge to solve a practical problem in livestock farming. To the students with diagnosis of specific learning disability (DSA) certified under law n. 170/2010, proper specific support will be provided (https://sea.unipr.it/it/servizi/le-eli-che-supporto-studenti-con-disabilita-dsa-bes).
In case of the persistence of the health emergency, the exams will be conducted remotely, as follows:
remote oral questions, through the Teams platform (guide http://selma.unipr.it/).
