Learning objectives
I) Knowledge and understanding: at the end of the course the student will
know the essentials and the financing processes in the national and
regional health systems; he/she will also know the characteristics and the
main tools of offer and demand in a health system.
II) Competences: at the end of the course the student will be able to read
and comment the main information about a national and regional health
system; he/she will also be able to compare the Italian health system to
another Country’s. Furthermore he/she will be able to use the main
demand&offer tools.
III) Making judgements: at the end of the course the student will be able
to comment the efficiency and efficacy of a health system and to assess
offer&demand in a health system.
IV) Communication skills: at the end of the course the student will be able
to use specific terminology in the field of systemic evaluations and to
communicate properly with organizations’ and entities’ management.
V) Learning skills: through case studies analysis, the student will be able
understand in depth the process of analysis, measurement and
assessment of a health system.

Course unit content
The course aims to provide students with the tools for economic reading
of the health system, to understand the dynamics and rules of the
system with particular attention to the role of the health professions.
The methodological approach requires the active involvement of the
participants and learning from the application of teaching concepts.
The course will develop the following topics:
1) The essentials of health economics; Reading the healthcare system in
key economic; Offer and demand system.
2) The National Health system and regional health systems.
3) The tools on the demand side; Business tools and organizational
methods, disease management, case management, strengthening
primary care, care models for chronic conditions.
4) International health systems; Interpretation of the NHS in comparison
with International Health Systems and the U.S. health care system.

Teaching methods
The course includes not only lectures, but also interactive teaching and
presentation of business cases.
In fact, each student will be required to develop their own project to
assess the economic outlook in the internalization of the organizational
dimension.
Students will be supported throughout the course for the development of
the project. It will be presented by each of them to colleagues in the last
lesson of the course, which arises as a moment of learning the practice.
Assessment methods and criteria
For business administration and healthcare economics, there is a
common exam, which consists in:
1. writing and discussion of a paper;
2. written exam with closed questions.
The final mark is defined on the basis of professors’ judgment about the
single parts of the exam.
