Learning objectives


The objectives of the course will be the acquisition of basic knowledge of the main laboratory techniques applicable in the diagnostic process in oncohaematology and in a haematological research laboratory.
The course will also have as its objective the achievement of independent judgement, communication skills and learning ability in the context of the differences within the different techniques and their applicability based on the question posed, whether diagnostic or research.

Course unit content


The contents of the lessons will focus on the main techniques used both in diagnosis and in research in a hematology laboratory. These techniques aim to identify, characterize and study hematopoietic stem cells and tumor cells from both a genetic, transcriptional and immunophenotypic point of view. Furthermore, the concept of minimal residual disease and the techniques for evaluating it will be introduced.

In particular, the concepts and techniques addressed both during the lectures and applied in the laboratory hours are:
- Minimal residual disease and its evaluation,
-Methods of separation of cell subpopulations.
-Flow cytometry.
-Conventional cytogenetics and FISH
-nucleic acid extraction, RT-PCR.
- NGS and single cell RNA seq
- cell cultures of mesenchymal cells and osteoblastic and osteoclastic differentiation methods.

Teaching methods


The teaching methods and teaching methodologies of the Course will be lectures and individual laboratory exercises. During the lectures, the main techniques used in a hematology laboratory for diagnostic and research purposes will be discussed. During the hours in the laboratory these techniques will be applied on biological samples.
The teaching material will be stored on the specific platform with access reserved for students (Elly)

Assessment methods and criteria


The primary mode of verification will be to make interactive lessons with questions aimed at students and their active involvement in the discussion on the main issues discussed during class.
The final exam will be oral. The questions concern topics covered during the lectures.
