Learning objectives

The course provides the information and the
scientific supports for
a correct methodological approach that develops the
knowledge and the
necessary understanding of the topics of Clinical
Biochemistry. This is to allow a
correct approach to the practical issues which are
specific to the student of the
Bachelor Degree in Techniques Of biomedical
laboratory. The acquired
skills will allow to understand the complexity of
biological samples, their
variability, and the critical steps associated with their
treatment and
conservation. This will allow you to recognize the
possible sources of
error and apply the appropriate remedies.

Prerequisites

There is no mandatory propedeuticity, but
considering that Clinical
Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary subject, the
student should have the
basic concepts of Biology, Anatomy,
Chemistry and
Biochemistry.

Course unit content

The course integrates , Physiology, Biochemistry,
Instrumental Biochemistry and Clinical
Biochemistry.

Full programme

The use of laboratory data in clinical practice. The
interpretation of
biochemical data. Reference and variability of
laboratory data. Disorders
of the hydrosiline equilibrium and of the acid-base
balance. Mechanisms underlying the general
functions of the cells as transports, electrical and
chemical communication, mechanical activity,
metabolism.
Functions of the main apparatus of the body as
cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal and endocrine.
Isoenzymes.
Determination of enzymatic activity. Analysis of
blood and urine.
Evaluation of hepatic function and diagnosis of
jaundice. Diabetes mellitus.
Glycemic homeostasis. Nucleotide metabolism and
hyperuricemia.
Metabolism of amino acids in clinical biochemistry.

Teaching methods

Lectures will be held on-site. Supporting material will be available
on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and
will include slide presentations, audio-video aids.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course consists of an oral examination of the entire course program. The students will be evaluated with votes ranging from 0 to 30, with 18 being the lowest vote to positively pass the exam of each module.
The final vote will be decided by mutual agreement among the teachers of the integrated course.
