At the end of the course, the student will have acquired awareness of the problems relating to the nature and properties of the main materials in common use.
- Skills: (II Descriptor: Ability to apply knowledge and understanding)
At the end of the course the student will have developed the ability to identify materials in terms of their performance and sustainability. He will be able to critically analyze the tables of the various properties of the materials. He will be able to distinguish the fields of application of the main classes of materials: metals, polymers and ceramics.
- Autonomy of judgment: (III, IV, V Dublin descriptor)
At the end of the course the student will have to possess the tools to design products with a critical conscience in choosing the appropriate materials to obtain certain performances.
- Communication skills: (III, IV, V Dublin descriptor)
At the end of the course, the student should have acquired sufficient language skills, at least as regards the specific technological terminology of the teaching.

Course unit content
The following topics will be covered:
- Atomic structure and interatomic bonds in materials.
- Introduction to Materials Science.
- Classification of materials, their structure and microstructure.
- Mechanical properties of materials: stiffness, strength, toughness, hardness.
- Thermal properties of materials: thermal capacity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, resistance to thermal shock.
- Main categories of materials: metals, ceramics, polymers. Structure, properties, processing.
- Sustainability of materials: reduction, reuse, recycling. Examples of metal, glass and polymer recycling.

Teaching methods
The teaching includes:
(i) Lectures in class using the projection of slides; the teaching material will be provided on the "Elly" platform (http://elly.dia.unipr.it).
(ii) Classroom exercises on the mechanical and thermal properties of materials.
(iii) Educational visits and/or seminars.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment of learning will be by a written test consisting of six questions and two numerical exercises. The oral exam is compulsory for those who achieve a grade between 18/30 and 21/30 on the written exam, while it will be optional for those who achieve a grade of at least 22/30. It will consist of two questions related to the teaching program, the answers to which may confirm, improve or worsen the written exam grade.
