Learning objectives
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- know the main approaches to the sociology of health (at micro, meso and macro level), its key concepts and the factors that can influence health and illness (especially social, economic and contextual factors);
- analyse with a critical approach and with properties of language the main issues related to health in both an individual and collective sense;
- apply the theoretical competences acquired during the course to the design and/or management of interventions at the socio-health level

Course unit content
The course is divided into two parts:
• In the first part, starting from the relationship between health and society, the main micro-, meso- and macro-sociological approaches to the study of health and illness will be analysed.
• In the second part of the course, starting from some key concepts, we will explore and discuss together some of the issues that have marked the sociology of health and medicine in recent years (including the doctor-patient relationship and the centrality of patient participation in health decisions, the medicalisation process, health inequalities, public and global health, etc.).

Teaching methods
Teaching activities will take place in presence and it will be conducted mostly with lectures in the first part of the course, in any case by promoting the exchanges and the discussions with the students. The second part of the course will alternate lectures with discussions on topics and researches, exercises and group work. During the lectures, slides will be projected and materials for discussion will be distributed. All materials will be made available on the Elly platform, also used for communications and notices
Students are warned that it is forbidden to disseminate course materials (slides) and notes associated with the lecturer's name outside of Unipr.
Assessment methods and criteria
The exam will be written and will focus on the handbooks. In particular, it will composed by 3 open-ended questions with no space limits (time available: 90 minutes). The questions are open and general, and have the aim to assess not only the concepts acquired by the students, but also their critical thinking skills and their ability to make connections between the various subjects studied. Each question will be marked out of 30. The final mark will be the average of the marks obtained in each question.
Other information
The lecturer is always available for clarifications on both lesson and the content and organisation of the classes (timetable, materials to be studied, examination procedures, etc.).
The office hours for A.Y. 2024-2025 are normally on Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. and can be in person or via the Teams platform. In any case, all students are invited to send an email to the lecturer in advance to make an appointment (in person or online). It is also possible to make an appointment on other days and/or times if students have problems on the day and/or time of the weekly office hours.
