Integrated course unit module: ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE AND OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE

Learning objectives

The Course of Clinical Pathology is part of the Integrated Course of Environmental Hygiene and Occupational Medicine.

The course aims to enable the student to know and understand the main laboratory tests, in order to achieve the ability to use the knowledge and understanding gained in identifying the patient's problems related to the disease

Prerequisites

Mandatory propedeutic examinations are defined by the Course Council.
Relevant bases of Biochemistry, Physiology, Immunology and General Pathology should be adequately recalled.

Course unit content

The first lessons cover general topics regard to biological materials and preparation of the patient. The second part of the course covers the main laboratory tests and their clinical interpretation.

Full programme

Insertion of the Laboratory data in the diagnostic procedure and its functions in other optics such as prevention, prognosis, therapy and screening. Emergency exams and routines (examples)
Evaluation criteria of the analytical data
Factors that influence the reliability and interpretation of laboratory data:
Preanalytic variability
Analytical variability

Hemochromocytometric examination
Chemical analysis of blood samples: hepatic profile (markers, protein synthesis, bilirubin), cardiac markers, glycaemia, Tumor markers

Renal system
Chemical-physical examination of urine
Osmolarity and specific weight
Dosing of the main electrolytes
Uriemia, azotemia, creatinine (and clearance)
Proteinuria, glycosuria, hemoglobinuria, hematuria

The slides used during the lectures will be made available on the Elly Platform

Teaching methods

The course will be conducted through interactive lectures in front of the students, with the aid of illustrative material that, at the end of the course, will be made available to students on Elly site at the pages of the course.
Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, if further instructions are not implemented.
During the lessons we will discuss the issues related to laboratory tests and their interpretation topic will be exposed, encouraging students to ask questions on the basis of references that will be provided.

Assessment methods and criteria

Verification tests in progress will not be carried out. Final assessment will be carried out through oral examination (with other teachers of the integrated course), during which one question will concern the topics of Clinical Pathology.
The exam will aim to evaluate the communication and learning skills of the student, as well as his/her ability to judge the health status of the hypothetical patients.

Students with SLD / BSE must first contact “Il centro accoglienza e inclusione” (https://www.cai.unipr.it/)).

Each student will be asked questions on topics listed in the extended program. The inability to answer (or at least ascertained inability to provide a correct definition of the pathological phenomenon subject of the application) will result in not passing the exam.
The student will be evaluated with votes ranging from 0 to 30, with 18 being the lowest vote to positively pass the exam. The final vote will be decided by mutual agreement among the teachers of the integrated course.
