Learning objectives
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- identity nursing care needs related to acute and chronic disease states in Pediatrics.
- acquire the knowledge and methods to manage nursing care in the pediatric field.

Course unit content
- Nursing care for the healthy newborn.
- Nursing care for the pathological newborn.
- Nursing care for children with alterations in the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems.
- Nursing care for children with cancer.
- Pediatric surgical patient nursing.
- Nursing care of the child with fever, febrile convulsions.
- Nursing care for diabetic children.
- Notes on pharmacology, routes of administration and dose calculation.
- The pediatric structure, the relationship with the child and the parent.
- Pain in Pediatrics.
- Nursing care for adolescents with psychiatric problems, behavioral, and eating disorders.
- Nursing care for children with infectious diseases.
Full programme
-Nursing care for the newborn:
.psychomotor development, weaning, brestfeeding, Apgar index, neonatal diseases, fever, dehydration, urinary tract infections.
-Nursing care for children with respiratory disorders:
. bronchiolitis, bronchospasm, pneumonia, asthma.
-Nursing care for children with disorders of the gastrointestinal system:
. acute gastroenteritis, celiac disease.
-Nursing care for pediatric surgical patients:
.acute appendicitis, intestinal invagination, hypertrophic stenosis of the pylorus.
-Nursing care for children with cancer:
.sickle cell disease, acute anaemia, leukaemia, haemophilia.
-Pain in the child:
. rating scales, treatment notes, no-pharmacological techniques.
- Drugs in Paediatrics:
. calculation of dosages, routes of administration.
- The nurse-child and nurse-parent relationship.
- Early interception of the clinical worsening of the hospitalized child:
. early interception systems.
- Psychiatric adolescent nursing, behavioral problems, eating disorders.
- Nursing care for the child with infectious disease:
. Meningitis, viral Encephalitis, Malaria, Tuberculosis

Teaching methods
-Frontal teaching with audio-visual supports.
-Classroom discussion with students.
- PBL.
Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam with publication of the results and possibility of refusing the grade in 1 week.
Afterwards oral exam with immediate communication of the result.
