Learning objectives
Acquisition of knowledge and understanding of the main hematologic diseases, laboratory and instrumental investigations, therapeutic strategies and tools, and specific aspects of nursing in the various conditions. The course has also the objective to provide the students with basic judging on patient condition, with tools for a correct communication on hematology, and with the bases for further studies.

Theme 1: Introduction to haematology.
Description: Overview of hematology, definition of key terms, and introduction to basic concepts.
Theme 2: Physiology and composition of blood.
Description: Study of blood physiology, including the cellular components (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets) and their roles in the human body.
Theme 3: Anemias and red blood cell disorders.
Description: Study of anemias, including types, causes, symptoms, and treatments. Analysis of erythrocyte disorders.
Theme 4: Platelet deficiency and coagulation disorders.
Description: In-depth study of thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) and coagulation disorders, including mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatments.
Theme 5: Acute leukemias
Description: In-depth study of acute leukemias, including classification, etiology, clinical presentation, and treatment options.
Theme 6: Lymphomas.
Description: Analysis of lymphomas, including Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In-depth study of their characteristics, diagnosis, and treatments.
Theme 7: Multiple myeloma.
Description: Study of multiple myeloma, including pathogenic mechanisms, clinical presentation, diagnostic tests, and treatment options.
Theme 8: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Description: Analysis of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as a therapy for hematologic diseases, including requirements, procedure, and complications.

Description: Study of inherited bleeding disorders, including hemophilia and von Willebrand disease. In-depth exploration of pathogenic mechanisms and treatments.

Teaching methods
Lessons with slides and videos and discussion with students. The means by which the lessons will be held might be changed, based on the dispositions regarding the Sars-Cov2 virus pandemia.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam on the whole program in one single session with other sections of clinical medicine integrated course. The knowledge and understanding of the subjects included in the program, reasoning capacity on the problems of hematologic and diabetic patients, the acquisition of a correct terminology and the possible personal elaboration will be evaluated. Final score results from academic board consultation, based on the grading obtained in each course section.
