Learning objectives

At the end of this course the student should know the basic phenomena of the classical electromagnetism and the underlying physical laws, the nature and properties of electromagnetic waves. He should also know the problems and phenomena leading to the fall of classical physics.


Newtonian Mechanics, calculus and vector calculus

Course unit content

lectromagnetic phenomena in vacuum and in materials, classical electrodynamics, waves, relativity, introduction to modern physics.

Full programme

Electricity and Magnetism: Electric charge, electric field and potential. Electrostatic field in the vacuum; laws of electrostatics. Conductors, dielectrics. Stationary electric currents, resistance, electric circuits. Static magnetic field. Ampere and Faraday laws. Time dependent electric and magnetic fields. Magnetic fields in matter (hint). Maxwell equations and electromagnetic waves.

Teaching methods

All lessons are hold on the blackboard and problem solving is a central issue.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written an oral examination. The student can choose a topic to begin the oral examination. There will be two midterm quizzes which contribute, if positive, to the
final written grade
