Learning objectives

.To complete the knowledge acquired in the Immunohaematology and Immunohaematology Investigation Techniques modules, with regard to transfusion safety, through the analysis of each phase of a complex pathway that starts from the moment of the analysis of the characteristics that a potential blood or blood component donor must possess, continuing up to the moment of blood component release and post-transfusion surveillance for the reporting of possible transfusion reactions.

Prerequisites

Having attended classes in immunology and immunohematology and related techniques.

Course unit content

The proposed pathway starts with how to recruit potential blood donors and goes all the way through to the transfusion of blood components, including possible transfusion reactions and their reporting. All the indications contained in the Decree of 2 November 2015 entitled: "Provisions relating to quality and safety requirements for blood and blood components" will be progressively followed

The origins of blood transfusion
- Review of blood and its components, erythrocyte antigens, blood groups and Rh factor
- The legislation for transfusion safety
- Costs
- The donation (who can donate, what can donate, laboratory investigations on the donor)
- Autotransfusion
- Indications for transfusion of: whole blood, erythrocyte concentrates, platelet concentrates, fresh frozen plasma
- The transfusion technique

Teaching methods

There will be face-to-face lectures involving the formation of working groups for discussion and analysis of clinical cases or specific topics

Learning will be verified through specific closed or open-ended tests that will determine the suitability of the student.

The achievement of the credits requires the obligation to attend all the scheduled hours.
