Learning objectives

Knowledge and ability to understand: Through the front lessons held during the course, the student will acquire the methods and knowledge necessary to understand the performances of the measuring instruments and their application fields.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
Through practical classroom and computer lab exercises, students learn how to apply knowledge acquired in a real context of design, as well as in multidisciplinary or non-familiar areas.
The possibility of creating an interdisciplinary and voluntary yearly work in a group enables the student to extend and apply, on a small scale, the practical knowledge gained theoretically in relation to the design and implementation of a service facility from the point of View of the chain of measurement and control.

Judgment autonomy
The student must be able to understand and evaluate critically the operation and performance of the various instruments / systems / measurement chains in order to identify the most appropriate application solutions

Communication skills
Through the front lessons, the comparison with the teacher and the project year of the year, the student acquires the specific vocabulary inherent to the world of measurements. It is expected that at the end of the course, the student will be able to transmit, in oral and written form, the main contents of the course, such as ideas, engineering issues and related solutions. The student must communicate his / her knowledge through appropriate means, so numerical problems are solved using common tools in the industry such as tables, plant diagrams, flow charts, and numerical spreadsheets.

Learning ability
The student who has attended the course will be able to deepen his / her knowledge of metrology and monitoring through autonomous consultation of specialized texts, scientific or dissertative journals, even outside lecture topics, in order to effectively approach the labor market or undertaking further training paths.


There is no mandatory propedeuticity. Exams in Analysis, Geometry, Mechanics Applied to Machines, Machine Construction are advised.

Course unit content

The course aims to provide students with the general criteria for choosing and implementing measurement systems from simple to complex. It starts from the basic metrology and the static and dynamic performances of the measuring instruments to address the main typologies of instruments used in mechanical engineering

Extended Program:
Measurement and Measures: measurement model, measurement uncertainty in measurements, systems and units of measurement, static properties of instruments, static calibration, certification and accreditation, measurement chains.
Signal Analysis Elements: Analog-to-Digital Conversion, Sampling and Aliasing, Fourier series series and transformations, Signal Analysis over time.
Dynamics of measuring instruments: measure model for dynamic measurements, transfer function, harmonic transfer function, order tools 0.1.2, parameters that characterize dynamic behavior.
Mechanical Measurements. Study and metrological characteristics, sensitivity to disturbances and their attenuation, applicability at time ranges of:
- Displacement measures: resistive and inductive transducers, differential transducers, laser contactless contact transducers and parasitic currents;
- Absolute displacement measures, acceleration, servo accelerometers;
- deformation measures: electric resistance strain gauges;
Temperature measurements: temperature scales, international temperature range, dilatation thermometers, electrical resistance, thermocouples, radiation, other non-contact sensors and thermocouples.


The PDF course lessons, and all the material used during lessons and exercises (transparencies, system diagrams, Excel sheets, movies) are made available to students via Elly portal.

Teaching methods

The course has a weight of 9 CFUs, which corresponds to 72 hours of lesson. The didactic activities will be conducted by privileging frontal classroom lessons alternating with computer lab exercises. During the frontal lessons the course topics from the theoretical-design point of view are dealt with in order to deepen the understanding of the themes and to present any preconoscenze on the themes in question by the formandi.
During classroom exercises, during which you can use personal computing tools such as computers, students will be required to apply theory to an exercise, a real studio case, or a project developed according to the methodological criteria outlined in lessons and Bibliographic and didactic material.
The possibility of performing an interdisciplinary and voluntary year work allows the student to extend and apply on a small scale the theoretical knowledge of design and implementation Of a service facility.
The slides and notes used to support the lessons will be uploaded at the beginning of the course on the Elly platform.
Notebooks, transparencies, spreadsheets, tables, and all shared material are considered an integral part of the didactic material. It reminds non-attending students to check the available teaching material and directions provided by the teacher through the Elly platform, the only communication tool used for direct teacher / student contact.
On this platform, day by day, the topics discussed in the lesson are set out, which will then be the content index for the preparation of the final exam.

Assessment methods and criteria

Final exam is a written test based on open-ended questions and not with a length of about 2 hours. The test usually consists of 10-12 questions that may relate to theoretical content, demonstrations, and exercises dealt with during the course; The weight of each question is assessed at each written test and if different from 1 communicated to the students. The test is exceeded if it reaches a score of at least 18 points. Praise, "Lode" is given in the case of achieving the highest score on each item to which the disciplinary vocabulary is added.
Students performing optional group work are exempted from the written exam questions that relate to the content of the second part of the course. The exact arguments from which they will be released will be communicated at the beginning of the course itself.
