Learning objectives

The aim of the course is to provide the student with a general preparation on the institutions and the mechanism of operation of the European Union, providing the knowledge and research tools that can allow a general preparation and easy use of sources (Eurlex).
The course also aims to provide specific training in the field of European transport law, complementary to their career in industrial engineering, stimulating students to deepen the most innovative themes of the sector and equipped with technical elements related to logistics and the transport market. This will also stimulate research in the field of European transport law, with knowledge of the research topics of the European institutions in this field.

Course unit content

The course provides a study of European transport law, both from the point of view of the market, that of private aspects.
After an introduction on internal, international and Community sources, the operation of the European Union, the transport-specific institutions and agencies (EASA, EMSA) will be described.
The issues of access to the transport market in the European Union and its operation after liberalisation, with particular reference to the aviation, maritime and railway sectors, will also be addressed.
Then the aspects of the regulation of the contract of transport, shipment and logistics will be examined, with examination also of the last normative modifications of the Civil Code in matter of logistics.
The course includes some monothematic seminars, related to the evolution of the discipline of transport, and in particular, for the a.a. 2022/2023, on the following topics: evolution of the discipline of autonomous driving vehicles; space law and research; investigation of accidents and nuisances in air transport; EMSA and protection of the sea. Seminars may include group activities for students interacting with speakers.

Teaching methods

The teaching method includes both lectures and seminars, which may include discussions with external speakers from European institutions and industry.
In the within of such seminars they can be previewed activities of group, which simulated processes, exercises on the procurement in the space field, examination of practical cases.

Assessment methods and criteria

For the students attending the lessons there is a written test for the verification of learning consisting of a multiple choice test on all the topics covered during the year, and a free question related to a topic that interested the student, to be treated as a thorough examination of the same (for the purpose of verifying the student’s ability to prepare a report on a subject in a complex way).
For non-attending students there is an oral test, to verify the knowledge of the topics of European transport law, on the basis of the suggested texts.
