Learning objectives

Knowledge and understanding
The modern manufacturing companies have to develop new or improved products, at a competitive cost and in ashorter time to market. In this context, at the end of the course the student will know a structured approach and modern methods to do thiswithin a company, knowing how to address best the development of a new product depending on its features.

Applying knowledge and understanding.
The student will develop a new product, accounting for market needs, the products / platforms from which to start, competing products, the processes to be implemented within the enterprise and internal/external resources to be committed. He will know how to choose the architecture to be given to the product and to evaluate the number of units sold according to the concept developed, associating an assessment of the industrial cost.

Making judgments
Students will be able to identify market opportunities for new products, evaluate product development, product structure, and business objectives between the market-pull and alternative (tecnology-push, custom, or platform) ), generate and select conceptual alternatives in a rational manner, taking into account the suitable performance compromises and verifying the sales potential of the product developed.

Communication skills
It is expected that, at the end of the course, the student will be able to transmit,in oral, written and graphical form, the process of developing a new product applied concretely to a case identified and assigned at the beginning of the course. Students must communicate their knowledge through appropriate means such as animated presentations, 3D CAD drawings, tables, diagrams, flow diagrams, and numerical spreadsheets.

Learning ability
The student who has attended the course will be able to deepen his / her knowledge of new product development methodologies through the autonomous consultation of specialized texts, scientific journals or dissertations, even outside lecture topics, to effectively tackle job placement or to undertake further training paths.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of the mechanical technology / manufacturing technologies is useful, although not mandatory

Course unit content

The course presents and applies in a concrete case, the structure of the product design and product development process and the methodologies that can be used for this purpose in the enterprises

Full programme

The course is divided into the following lectures: - Introduction to the product design and development process; - Organization and management of development projects; - Planning of the product; ¬ Identification of customer needs; - Definition of product specifications; ¬ Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and House of Quality (HOQ) in product design and development; - Conceptual design: generation and selection of ideas; - Testing of the concept; - Architecture of the product; - Role of the industrial design; - Design for assembly; - Prototyping. Lectures are alternated with lab classes on the use of 3D CAD in product development (SolidWorks software) for the desing of parts and assemblies

Bibliography

Ulrich K.T., Eppinger S.D., Product design and development, McGraw- Hill,5° Ed., 2011. The slides displayed during the course are made available to students in PDF format along with other course materials (Word templates, Excel spreadsheets) on the Elly platform, after the student has enroled to the course

Teaching methods

The course has a weight of 6 CFU, which corresponds to 42 hours of frontal lesson. Didactic activities will be conducted by focusing on frontal classroom lessons with the help of PowerPoint slides, alternating with laboratory exercises on the use of CAD 3D (SolidWorks software). During the frontal lessons, the course topics from a theoretical point of view are presented. At the end of each lesson, students are asked a question whose elaboration and solution is discussed collectively in the classroom the next time. For processing and solving the question, students can use personal computing tools such as computers, tablets / smartphones connected to the internet

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of the oral presentation and discussion of the project of development of an innovative product. The identification of the product to be developed is carried out by students by the third lesson of the course, possibly taking advantage of the suggestions given by the teacher. The project includes: report in Word, PowerPoint presentation (maximum duration 25 min), 3D CAD drawings of the product developed. The project ends at the stage of embodiment design, which defines the concept of a product, its architecture, materials and production technology, but not detail drawings with the dimensions and the final form (industrialization). The evaluation, up to the score of 30/30 and Lode, is made based on the presence of the above elements, the comprehensiveness of the development activities shown in the classroom, the consistency and completeness of the description of the activities performed

Other information

Activities carried out by students as part of their participation in the Formula Student through the UniPR Racing Team, can be recognized for the Product Design and Development course as alternative to the conventional program, by agreement with the teacher before the beginning of the activity and upon presentation and discussion of the results during the examination session.
According to the authorization of the Director of the Department, in case of the impossibility of the teacher to be in the classroom for health reasons, and after notifying the students, the lesson will be held online in a synchronous or asynchronous way on Microsoft Teams.
The procedure for subscribing to the Teams channel of the course is described on Elly.
