Learning objectives

The activities envisaged for the first year of the course are mainly aimed at the gradual integration of the student into the health and laboratory environment.
This training involves the acquisition of a general knowledge:
- laboratory environments (map showing them the overall perimeter of the Operational Unit, divided into the various sectors, outlining the peculiar activities carried out and the present professionalism - Organigram),
- the main safety standards to be observed,
- the basic roles and functions of the various professionals present, - the basic analytical tools necessary to ensure the proper performance of laboratory activities such as centrifuges, hoods, automatic pipettes, laboratory glassware, devices and controls, etc.
The students will be divided into two / three groups and placed in different different training venues. They will observe, learn and then try to practice, supervising the trainee guides, in the main routine activities as detailed in the specific program that will be delivered to them beforehand. At the end of the expected period, an interchange will be carried out between the various groups so that each student is guaranteed the same professional experience.

Prerequisites

It is essential that each student completed and completed the course on safety (4 levels), who attended the theoretical lessons of the first semester and the preparatory professional laboratories before undertaking the internship.

Course unit content

Professional training is the key element in the training of undergraduate students in Biomedical Laboratory Techniques and is therefore considered a fundamental step in the training path as it focuses on the development of specific skills, diagnostic reasoning and critical thinking. This very important training activity reduces the gap between theoretical training and practical training, but in order to achieve this important goal, experience must be carried out in an environment that facilitates the process of "fusion" between these parts and that it is An appropriate supervisor tutorial is activated, open to constant feedback between students and tutors.

Full programme

The first year of activity characterizes the phase of acceptance of biological samples in different laboratories (suitability of samples, congruence between request and examination required, completeness and correspondence of the patient's personal data on request and sample, modes of transport , Integrity of containers, etc.) in order to prevent the pre-analytical error). Subsequently, students will be divided into small groups and included in the various routine areas by the Coordinators. In these areas, they will conduct an experience of the main core activities (as detailed in the paper program delivered to students and tutors)
Which provides for them to be granted a period of permanence to guarantee them the learning of these activities characterized by gradual and growing complexity.
The main activities concern the year: execution of quality controls, instrumental calibration, maintenance, execution of the various analytical methods, cleaning and interpretation of the results obtained)

Bibliography

The teaching material relating to the different methods will be provided by the Tutors (internship guides), while the reference texts are those indicated by the teachers who teach the techniques of each specific laboratory area.

Teaching methods

Teaching and apprenticeship strategies are designed to consider the following pedagogical principles and values:
-use a learning model from experience;
- empowering the student by using self-directed learning methods by applying the pedagogical principles of adult learning;
- tutoring (by experienced professionals) to ensure constant supervision and to encourage the student learning process;
- ensure the transparency of the evaluation process.
Students should be informed in advance of the standards that will be used to evaluate their performance and the elements that will contribute to the final voting of their internship.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of learning involves an individual interview which will be followed by practical testing that will be carried out in one of the internships within the Parma Hospital-University Hospital. This test, taken in agreement with the examination committee, will be based on the evaluation of the technical skills achieved on one of the activities provided for in the training program.

Other information

The student can register for the internship exam only after passing the exams relating to basic techniques and techniques of clinical biochemistry and after completing all the hours scheduled for the year of attendance.
During the exam the student must present the internship booklet certifying the program carried out.
